Holiday eCommerce 2011

Online retailers are gearing up for a big holiday season. According to data compiled for the AdAge infographic below, eCommerce is expected to see big growth this year. Especially striking is the extent to which mobile devices will play a role in consumer shopping this year, with over half of all shoppers saying they'll use their phones, iPads, and other smart devices to research products and find deals.

Shop.org's survey of its members reveals that the big eCommerce players are gearing up ever-earlier for holiday sales. Online retailers seem to be shifting their efforts from pushing Cyber Monday to muscling in on the Black Friday action.  Last year we introduced you to the Frantic Four, the major shopping weekend encompassing Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday. Cyber Monday was never actually the high point for online holiday sales until last year (2010) when it did indeed top the daily sales charts. With online sales taking an increasingly large slice of the holiday fruitcake, will Cyber Monday become a quaint reminder of the early days of eCommerce, when we thought of online shopping as its own little phenomenon? We'll see....
